SilentHeat Project

ATA Mute is a partner in the SilentHeat Project, a collaborative innovation initiative focused on overcoming one of the most persistent challenges in sustainable heating: noise. As heat pumps become a cornerstone of the energy transition, ensuring acoustic comfort is essential for widespread acceptance in residential environments. SilentHeat addresses this challenge by embedding advanced acoustic technologies directly into the heart of the heat pump system.
Pioneering the Next Generation of Ultra-Quiet Heat Pumps
Heat pumps play a vital role in reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions. However, in many urban and residential settings, noise generated by fans, compressors, and vibrations can negatively affect user comfort and even lead to complaints from neighbors. These concerns can slow down adoption and limit the potential impact of sustainable heating solutions.
The SilentHeat Project was initiated to remove this barrier by developing a heat pump concept in which noise reduction is not an afterthought, but a core design principle. The goal is to achieve a significant reduction in both airborne sound and structure-borne vibrations, while maintaining high efficiency, reliability, and compactness.
Tackling Noise as a Barrier to the Energy Transition
Within SilentHeat, ATA Mute contributes its deep expertise in acoustic engineering and noise control technologies. Building on research originating from Eindhoven University of Technology, ATA Mute develops solutions that effectively attenuate sound across a broad frequency range, including the low frequencies that are often perceived as the most disturbing.
A key focus of ATA Mute within the project is the development and application of innovative acoustic concepts that can be seamlessly integrated into heat pump components, rather than added as external insulation. This approach enables superior acoustic performance while preserving design flexibility and thermal efficiency.
Key Technological Developments
The SilentHeat Project brings together multiple complementary innovations which are led or co-developed by ATA Mute:
-
Silent fan technology
New fan concepts are being developed to reduce noise at the source, focusing on optimized airflow, reduced turbulence, and vibration control. The aim is to significantly lower sound emissions without compromising performance or durability. -
Advanced compressor acoustic solutions
Compressors are a major source of low-frequency noise and vibrations. ATA Mute is developing high-performance acoustic jackets and enclosures that combine sound absorption and vibration damping, specifically tailored for heat pump applications. -
Next-generation ATA Mute Acoustic Sheets
A new generation of proprietary acoustic sheets is being engineered for direct integration into the heat pump housing. These materials provide broad-band noise reduction while remaining thin, lightweight, and suitable for industrial-scale production.
Together, these technologies form an integrated acoustic system that addresses noise at multiple levels, resulting in a quieter and more comfortable heat pump.
ATA Mute’s Role and Acoustic Expertise

SilentHeat is a collaborative effort involving industrial partners, academic institutions, and innovation hubs. ATA Mute works closely with Weheat, and Eindhoven University of Technology to combine applied research, product development, and real-world validation. This multidisciplinary collaboration ensures that scientific insights are translated into practical, scalable solutions.
Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing
The SilentHeat Project officially started in late 2024 and is currently in full development. Prototype testing and validation are ongoing, with the first measurable results expected in early 2026. These outcomes will provide valuable insights into how advanced acoustic design can accelerate the adoption of sustainable heating technologies.
Project Timeline and Outlook
The SilentHeat Project is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with additional support from the Dutch National Government and the Province of Noord-Brabant under the OPZuid program. This support enables the development of high-impact innovations that contribute to a more sustainable, comfortable, and future-proof built environment.
Funding and Support
With SilentHeat, ATA Mute reinforces its mission to improve quality of life through cutting-edge acoustic solutions. By reducing noise at the source and integrating acoustics into the core of product design, SilentHeat represents an important step toward quieter, more widely accepted sustainable heating systems.
