Heat pump noise reduction

The European heat pump market has been experiencing significant growth in recent years, driven by the increasing demand for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly heating solutions. In 2021, the market achieved a remarkable milestone with 2.17 million heat pump units sold across Europe, setting a sales record and indicating a positive trend in the industry. As heat pumps have become increasingly popular for their energy-efficient heating and cooling capabilities, the issue of noise has emerged as a significant concern for users. Despite their energy advantages, the acceptance of heat pumps is hampered by the low-frequency noise they generate, especially at night.

In response, the Dutch government has published new noise requirements for outdoor units of heat pumps and air conditioners, stipulating that the noise level at the property boundary should not exceed 40 dB(A). This has highlighted the urgency of reducing noise in heat pumps and HVAC systems, prompting manufacturers to seek solutions to lower sound power levels below this limit as soon as possible. If the noise level issue of heat pumps can be resolved, they could play a crucial role in the energy transition process.

ATA Mute offers three solutions for reducing heat pump noise. First, we are designing acoustic tapes to attach to the blades of axial fans to reduce low-frequency noise. Second, we are developing ultra-thin mufflers (covers) for application on the casing of outdoor units to absorb noise. Third, and most importantly, we have developed and created MVPs of the Acoustic Compressor Jacket, which covers the compressor and absorbs noise before it propagates outside. The ATA Mute compressor jacket boasts an absorption coefficient of 50% (particularly at frequencies below 500 Hz) with a thickness of only 1 cm.
